Double iSmart is a 2024 Indian Telugu-language science fiction action film directed by Puri Jagannadh, who co-produced the movie with Charmy Kaur under the banner Puri Connects. Serving as a spiritual sequel to the 2019 hit iSmart Shankar, the film stars Ram Pothineni reprising his role, with Bollywood veteran Sanjay Dutt making his Telugu debut as the antagonist. The ensemble cast also includes Ali, Kavya Thapar, Sayari Shinde, and Bani J. The music is composed by Mani Sharma, with cinematography by Gianni Giannelli and Shyam K. The narrative centers on a notorious criminal known as Big Bull (Sanjay Dutt), who, upon discovering he has a terminal brain tumor, becomes desperate to cheat death. He hires a rogue scientist to transfer his mind into another body. The ideal candidate for this procedure is Ustaad iSmart Shankar (Ram Pothineni), a street-smart renegade with a unique memory transfer port in his brain—a remnant from previous events. This setup leads to an intense confrontation between Shankar and Big Bull, blending elements of science fiction with high-octane action.

Double iSmart was released theatrically on August 15, 2024, coinciding with Indian Independence Day. The film received an ‘A’ (adults only) certification from the Central Board of Film Certification due to its violence and strong language.

Mani Sharma composed the film’s music, continuing his collaboration from the first installment. The soundtrack features energetic tracks that complement the film’s high-octane narrative. Notable songs include “Stepp Amaar,” “Maar Mantha Chod Chinta,” “Kya Lafda,” “Big Bull,” and the “Mother Song,” each contributing to the film’s dynamic atmosphere.  

                                                     Reception

Upon release, Double iSmart garnered mixed reviews. While some praised the performances and action sequences, others criticized the film’s plot and execution. BVS Prakash of Deccan Chronicle noted that despite the intriguing sci-fi premise, the film struggled with its outlandish plot. Sashidhar Adivi of Times Now described the film as a tedious affair, and Sowmya Rajendran of The News Minute opined that the film was double the torture. Neeshita Nyayapati of Hindustan Times highlighted that the focus on making the protagonist likable overshadowed the need for a coherent story.
